Swimming Carnivals
Coaching Procedures for Carnivals
Coaches can use the following guidelines at swimming carnivals:
Warm up
At regional and invitational carnivals the swimmers will do a group warm up. At representative meets the swimmers will likely be doing an individual warm up.
- Arrive on time for the warm up. Where you can't make it to the warm up please organise this with other coaches.
- Remember to be sun safe.
- Get all swimmers together where possible before hopping into the water before warm up.
- In group warm ups start with a longer swim (e.g. 400) to give late comers a chance to fit in with the group as they arrive. Also remember to check if backstroke walls will be slippery.
- Remind swimmers to go in feet first during warm ups where necessary.
- At the end of a group warm up get the swimmers together for a final team talk if possible.
Team talk (group warm up)
- Remind swimmers to see you after each race (and before if necessary).
- Remind swimmers to drink water and be sun safe.
- Go over anything you want them to focus on.
- Give a positive talk.
During the Meet
- Talk to swimmers after their races. Make sure to include something positive they did along with anything they need to improve on. Be honest with them. If they swam badly tell them. Be encouraging.
- Remember to stay hydrated :)
- At higher level meets it is possible for swimmers to be requested to undertake drug testing. They are entitled to have some one accompany them for sections of this. For these meets please read up on the drug testing procedures on the anti doping and sport website or through swimming Australia.
- Throughout the meet please act professionally at all times.
